Happy birthday Jim...

This is my mom's husband Jim...One of the nicest guys around. Takes everything in stride. Guess its a good thing since he did marry a woman that had 5 children..! Yikes!!!!

Today is his birthday...

This is what he looked like when he married my mother.. Look how happy he was!!! And look how he styled his hair....Very fashionable..

Not much has changed over the years...Still looks happy here and same hair...

Yep...still the same...Looks like Mom changed her hair..Not Jim tho.

Wait!! I think I see just a tad of gray around his temples..And..he has resorted to playing with dolls at this age...!!!

Hang in there Jim..Its all going to be ok...

One of my favorite things about Jim, are his Elvis impersonations.. Not like in Las Vegas or anything like that, but just for us. Yes..we are his audience and his biggest fans... Well there was this one time....

We had gone out to dinner at the local VFW .....Friday night.. There we were in our booth and someone played an Elvis song. For the life of me I cant remember which one except I do know it was a rocker...Anyway..here goes Jim...He flips up his collar and begins to shake his leg.

Mom and I look at each other and we just KNOW whats going to happen. We cant believe it..OMGOSH! Don't do it!!! Its like that Ray Stevens song about the streak, don't look Ethel!!!

But there he goes...He takes the dance floor and does the whole song...No one else is up there..Just Jim....looking and acting like Elvis!!!! The whole place breaks into applause...
Jim doesn't miss a beat...He doesn't even seem to realize that he is the ONLY one on the floor or maybe he does and just doesn't care...It was almost like Elvis came back to earth just for one more song...

We are laughing so hard there are tears rolling down our faces....It was classic...

So you have a great birthday today, Jim....Get out there and shake a leg why don't you?

Love,

Me

Why doesn't my Uncle Frank read my blog?

The reason I started my blog was so that my family could keep up with what is happening with me and mine half way across the United States. I typically only get back *home* to Pennsylvania once a year. It is so important to me that my mother and sister in law and aunt and well..everyone in my family see these grandchildren of mine as they grow up.

So..in saying that I was very surprised to hear that my Uncle Frank does NOT read my blog. WHAT?! Are you kidding me? Why not?

He has always been my favorite uncle on my mother's side. (Ok..well..hes my ONLY uncle on my mother's side, but I'm just saying..) I was hurt, crushed and a little upset to find out that he wasn't a daily reader.

So..because he does not read my blog, I guess I can talk a little about him here and maybe let you all see my Uncle Frank..(Since he doesn't read how will he ever know?)

Mom, did you know that when Uncle Frank used to babysit us that he made us all sit on the couch? He did! All 4 of us...

This is what we looked like at that time...I'm the one on the left..The oldest...with the pixie type haircut..and no front teeth. I'm NOT the one with the beautiful blond, naturally curly hair and blue eyes. Nope..

(Hey Mom..Why did you cut my hair this way? My therapist wants to know too..just kidding)

Once we started getting on his nerves, which was about 15 minutes after you left, he would tell us all to get on the couch and stay there...Then when we got too loud, he would tell us we weren't allowed to even talk.. Then he said we weren't even allowed to laugh!!!! He did!!!! So there we sat, the whole evening.....Hours on end..Until we eventually went to sleep..It was terrible..Horrible...Ive never recovered...(I'm just telling it like I remember it. It just might be true!)

Then do you know what else he used to do? He used to sing this "witch doctor" song.. You know the one..

Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla, bing bangOoo eee, ooo ah ah ting tangWalla walla, bing bang...Ooo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla, bing bangOoo eee, ooo ah ah ting tang Walla walla, bing bang.

Over and over and over and over..So there we sat...all lined up on the couch with our hands covering our ears while your brother teased us relentlessly with that song.

Mom..I cant make this stuff up...

There he is with the red cap on. I just know he had that witch doctor music playing in that car..I just KNOW it!!

Anyway..Since he doesn't read my blog, he'll never know I told you. Keep it to yourself ok??

Love,

Me

Last night

Last night I was in the house taking some pictures of this and that and getting things in order because we were expecting a storm. Lightning, hail, you know.. that kind of stuff. Well, Marley gets really nervous when she hears thunder so I was holding her and telling her it was going to be ok. Then I broke out the herbal drops and gave her some. It helps..

Anyway Im taking pictures of some things I may use in the future for my blog and Mickey comes in the back door and tells me to come outside and watch the sky with him. He KNOWS how much I LOVE the Oklahoma sky..

Bob said, "Sure, lets go!".

So I grab my camera and head out and take a seat on the bench beside my husband....The show begins...

It was beautiful and scarey and exhilirating...

The storm was just far enough away to sit and watch and be dry and safe where we were..

I was wishing I had taken a camera class like Mickey suggested but of course I havent yet....

I was wishing I had a super duper lightning lens to take really fantastic shots.... The storm was getting louder and louder and the flashes were coming faster and faster...

I was wishing I could see in the dark to explore the 1001 possibilites that exist on my camera and figure out how to take the perfect shot.. Not like this shakey shot below...

Suddenly out of nowhere this happened..!!!!

CRACK!!!!BOOM!!!!!!

And I ran in the house and closed the door and took some herbal drops and crawled under the bed with Marley.

I am now officially afraid of storms..

Love,

Me

ps. Mom, dont worry..I promise I'll be good when the next storm comes, ok????

July 28, 1990

I always wanted my blog to be happy...Filled with fun and kids and laughs...and Bob..

But you all know as well as I do that sometimes we are faced with things that arent happy.

This date..July 28th...Its the day my dad died. And actually he didnt just die but was tragically killed while at work. Only 52 years old. We all miss him terribly..

Wish I could turn back time and make it all better..

I just wanted to share some things about him with you...

My dad was born on June 19, 1938...

He was born to these two...

My grandfather..

and ...my grandmother..

He was born upstairs in the house my grandma grew up in. My grandmother was young and really didnt know what to expect when she gave birth. She told me that during labor she began to loose her eyesight..The room grew darker and darker but she thought it was all just part of it and never told anyone..OMGosh!! She could barely see at all...She was actually very sick and could have died!!!

Here are some pictures I took from his baby book at my grandmothers house..I love how the "Eckard girls" gave him a quarter and a rattle..so cute!

Wonder what the 'cat doll' looked like???

I think also it was remarkable he didnt get sick until he was 5 months old. They did a very good job taking care of him in spite of my grandmother being so young..

Dont you know they had a time with keeping the 9 month old off the stairs!! Yikes!!!!

Here is the page where they were to record the events of his 3rd birthday...Doesnt look like he had a very good time for his 3rd birthday...

According to my grandmother, he was a very active child...Probably ...trying.. (smile)

But he grew up and went to school and matured into a man.....

He joined the navy and traveled the world.. He told me stories of sea turtles and friends and peeling potatoes....

He came home and married my mother....

He worked hard all his life....Doing very gruelling work..

But I dont think he would have done much differently.

He had a lot of friends. He had a family that loved him. He loved going to sales and being a collector. He had a good heart..

That he did..

He was tough and sensitive. He loved us.. He had a grin that couldn't be imitated, but it passed through me to my son and now my grandson. I stop every time I see it.

He loved to have fun but he was also a hard worker. He was always for the underdog and wanted us to be the same.

Thats my dad..

Love,

Me

Mom...Make this

Remember all those potatoes we were given by the guy Mickey did the digging for?

Well that same fellow gave us these! Yeah for the barter system!!!

Now I can make something that we love!!!

Take your tomatoes and cut them up really small ....

Then add some chopped green onion and chopped jalapen'o.....

Dont forget most importantly, cilantro....If you have never tried it, please do.

Its very easy to grow...Then when its finished growing the leaves it turns into coriander seeds? How cool is that? A plant that produces two things...awesome....
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is an annual herb in the family Apiaceae. It is also known as cilantro, particularly in the Americas. Coriander is native to southern Europe and North Africa to southwestern Asia. It is a soft, hairless plant growing to 50 cm [20 in.] tall. The leaves are variable in shape, broadly lobed at the base of the plant, and slender and feathery higher on the flowering stems. The flowers are borne in small umbels, white or very pale pink, asymmetrical, with the petals pointing away from the centre of the umbel longer (5-6 mm) than those pointing towards it (only 1-3 mm long). The fruit is a globular dry schizocarp 3-5 mm diameter.
Just some info...

Then salt and pepper..

Then slice up some avacado....then add some lime juice...

Yummy..Yummy...Yummy...

Get some tortilla chips...or not..whatever...just eat it..

Me

A history tour

A couple of years ago I took my two grandchildren to Pennsylvania...It was their first plane ride. We stayed for 10 days..There was a lot to be done in that length of time. We had lots of family to see and lots of places to visit..

Next summer I plan on taking another trip there with them again but this time we will have Addyson..all three.

Some very dear pictures that I took while there...More to follow in the weeks to come...

Here are Dylan and Emma eating peaches with their great great grandmother...Sitting at the same table that their great great grandfather, great grandfather, grandfather, and father have sat and had many meals, played cards, talked etc....

Dylan riding his daddys tricycle..

Emma rocking on her great great great grandfathers chair. It is fondly called the *thinking chair*.

The kids going through the french doors that were built by my own grandmothers father. This is the same house my grandmother grew up in. This was a Sears and Roebuck house..http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/

How about playing the piano at their other great great grandmothers house?

Getting some elderly advice...

Or eating off the same plates that I did as a kid..And showing how big your muscles are growing from all the good food!!

My daughter in law and I had a great time! We are really looking forward to driving next year instead of flying so we can introduce the little ones to other areas of the United States.

Me

Its a "hands on" childrens musuem..

You can play doctor here..

Or grocery store...

How about being a news anchor?

Or join a group of fellow explorers and dig for dinosaur bones

Then you can always operate on someones funny bone...

Or just monkey around a little...

Then take a spin in a Model T.

Plenty to see and do....

Including a train ride.

Its a great place to visit and enjoy the day...

This is what you see...

I never get enough of it...

Sometimes I could just cry.....

Because it is so ........beautiful......

And I know I am happy to be alive.....and seeing...

another beautiful Oklahoma sunset.....

So, Mom....

Dont ever worry about me...I may get homesick...After all Im still a kid. (Sort of)

But I have a lot here......Its ok...
Please click on each photo to enlarge...Its worth it..
